LAB SAFETY

SCIENCE SAFETY This course includes hands-on activities and labs that use chemicals, expensive equipment, and other materials that can be dangerous if used improperly. The science safety rules and contract are established to provide a safe science experience.

SAFETY RULES Be RESPONSIBLE ! No horseplay or practical jokes in the lab. Follow all DIRECTIONS, both written and oral. Do NOT play with the lab equipment or do your own experiments. Do NOT eat or drink during labs. Notify your teacher of any accidents or unsafe conditions in the lab. X HELP!!!

SAFETY RULES Wash your hands with soap and water before leaving the lab. Return all equipment to it’s proper place before leaving the lab. Wipe down your lab table with Lysol/Clorox wipes before leaving the lab. Rinse out all glassware with water before leaving the lab.

SAFETY SYMBOLS Protect your Eyes: Wear Goggles Be careful where you use electrical devices Be careful when using Bunsen burners and hot plates Handle sharp objects with care! Treat live animals with care Be sure of what chemicals you are using Wear gloves Treat plants with care

MATCH THE SAFETY SYMBOL TO THE MEANING 1.Always cut away from fingers and bodies and carry sharp instruments with sharp edge facing down. 2.Do not place a cord where someone can trip over it. 3.Wear goggles when working with chemicals, open flames, or heating devices. 4.Tie back loose hair and clothing when working with an open flame.

1.Never point the open end of a container you are heating towards yourself or your lab partners. 2.Wash your hands after handling animals. 3.Wear gloves when handling specimens or chemicals that could be harmful to the skin. 4.Never touch, taste or smell a chemical unless instructed by your teacher. MATCH THE SAFETY SYMBOL TO THE MEANING

SAFETY EQUIPMENT Where are the following items located in your science lab? Fire Extinguisher Emergency Shower Emergency Blanket Eye Wash Station Broken Glass Receptacle Emergency Exit

FIRE EXTINGUISHER GUIDE To operate the fire extinguisher remember P-A-S-S P - Pull the Pin A -Aim the hose at the base of the fire from 5-6 feet away. S -Squeeze the handle. S -Sweep the hose back and forth across the fire. Do NOT operate a fire extinguisher unless there is a fire!!!!

SAFETY EQUIPMENT USE Emergency Shower : Stand under shower and pull down on lever. Remain until shower stops. Emergency Eyewash : Place head so that eyes are between eye wash heads, pull lever, rinse eyes thoroughly. Emergency Blanket : Take out of container and wrap around person to smother flames Broken Glass Receptacle : 1 st notify the teacher, then clean up and put glass in receptacle container.

WHAT’S WRONG WITH THIS SCENARIO? Heather and Jose were absent the day before when the lab was discussed. They gathered their materials and watched the other students in the lab to figure out what to do, not taking time to read the directions. Use your lab safety contract to determine what safety rule(s) have been violated.

WHAT’S WRONG WITH THIS SCENARIO? Rose was heating a test tube. She didn’t put on safety goggles because she was wearing glasses. She pointed the open end of the test tube away from herself but towards her lab partners on the opposite side of the lab table. Use your lab safety contract to determine what safety rule(s) have been violated.

WHAT’S WRONG WITH THIS SCENARIO? Barbie and Ken accidentally break a beaker full of some chemical. Instead of risking getting in trouble they quickly clean up the mess with paper towel and throw it in the garbage. Use your lab safety contract to determine what safety rule(s) have been violated.

DUCKS SAFETY D o only what you are instructed. U se proper safety precautions. (Goggles and common sense!) C lean up after yourself. K eep aware of all instructions before starting an experiment. S top! Inform your instructor if an accident occurs.
