Implementing the Single Wing with Bobbleheads (7-8-9 year olds/Mitey Mite Division) Mike Sommers San Marcos Pop Warner Crusaders 2004-2005

First Year vs. Second Year 2nd Year (7-4) –Started pulling and SAB blocking. –Only used the Wedge on a few plays. –Every kid but three carried the ball in a game. 1st Year (4-6-1) –Only Wedge blocking on the line, with TE’s taking on the outside rush. –Didn’t pull. –Every player on the team got at least one carry in a game.

Why I chose to run the Single Wing I wanted something that would be fairly simple for our players. An offense where I could put any kid in anywhere, and they could play. Especially in cases where we may be blowing out another team. I had seen too many problems with the exchange on handoffs at this level.
4
Biggest Mistake in 1 st Year Thinking that the kids wouldn’t be able to pick up a different blocking scheme.
5
I let everyone know at the first practice that the Center and Offensive Linemen were the most important players on our team, and re-emphasized it as the season progressed. Linemen RULE!

We immediately went to this formation after breaking every huddle. On “Shift” we would move into our play formation. Pre-Shift

After the 3 rd week of the season, we threw in a new formation or play nearly every other week to try to keep our opponents on their toes. Keeping our opponents on their toes Beast Right Spread Heavy Left Buck Seam (Last 2 weeks)

Heavy Left Formation We would break the huddle to the ball with the left Guard lining up over the ball in Pre-Shift.

#1 Rule when coaching the Bobbleheads Don’t underestimate their ability to learn, and understand, their assignments! Most of them want to learn new things. My O-Line last year got smiles on their faces every time they got to pull.
21
Things I intend to do this year Implement some of Dave Cisar’s ideas (i.e. backfield stance, 2.5 yds. off ball). Add some motion. More pulling, especially from the backside. A little more passing (specifically from the Center to the Backs). We will be using wrist coaches this year.
