Japan and U.S. in 1930s  Japanese invasion of Manchuria, 1931  Japan’s attacks on China, 1937  Japan invades Southeast Asia in 1941  U.S. embargoes all scrap iron & oil to Japan  Japan holds peace talks in Washington with Sec. of State Cordell Hull; while planning secret attack on U.S.

3  December 7, 1941: Early Sunday morning, 3 waves of Japanese fighters (Zeroes) led surprise attack on the U.S. Naval Installation at Pearl Harbor & Hickam Field  Destruction was enormous  2,400 Americans killed  Almost 200 aircraft destroyed  All 8 battleships in port either sunk or seriously damaged

5  Dec. 8, President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked Congress for a formal Declaration of War  The vote was unanimous; The U.S. was finally shaken out of its isolationism  3 days later, Germany and Italy declared war on America
