Agenda 09-18-2015 1. Introduction: Objectives and Purpose 2. Homework 3. Science Fair Problem Hypothesis Variables Independent Dependent Controlled 4. Endorsements

Objectives Students will be able to: –State the problem and hypothesis of a scientific investigation. –Identify the variables and control of a scientific investigation.

Purpose Students will be able to: –Apply the knowledge gained to complete a science fair project.

Homework Work on the science fair project.

Purpose and Hypothesis Problem Hypothesis Variables Materials and Methods of Procedure Results Conclusions References

Make Observations (Research) Search for information about the topic of interest.

State Problem (Question) What can be solved through investigation or experimentation.

Formulate a Hypothesis Formulate a Hypothesis : Predict a possible answer to the problem or question. Example: If soil temperature increases, then the plant will grow taller.

Variables Independent –Condition that you will change during the experiment. Dependent –Condition that will change as a result of changes of the independent variable (observations).

Controlled Variables Conditions that will stay the same during the experiment. You control to reduce error.

Endorsement Special permission only needed if you work with humans, microorganisms, animals, animal tissue or DNA. Hint: check Dr. C site, “City Science Fair” link.

Purpose and Hypothesis Problem Hypothesis Variables Materials and Methods of Procedure Results Conclusions References

Prepare for the Science Fair –Go to HMS Website http://ichernandez.org/

Prepare for the Science Fair –Check your email –You receive a link to the “Science Fair Report Template” –Follow the directions on the mail

Prepare for the Science Fair If you don’t have a science fair project… –Research magazines, books –Google! Type: “science fair projects” “science fair ideas” DUE TODAY!!! Submit your project idea to Dr. Canizales (index card) –Include: Name, Room # & Idea
