7 What is Creativity? Creativity is a mental process involving generation, or of discovering new associations between existing ideas or concepts. An alternative, more everyday concept of creativity is that it is simply the act of making something new.

8 Creative Introductions Find someone who has the same card as you. Get to know them. You will then be asked to introduce your partner to the rest of the group in a creative and/or numerical way including: Their name, Area of work/interest, Reasons to be here/expectations, A number or drawing that might represent an aspect of their work or life!!

9 Aims and objectives of the session Outline and discuss strategies for effective teaching and learning of numeracy Identify activities that engage students in learning numeracy Explore “Thinking Through Mathematics” approaches and activities Enrich own mathematical thinking Have a creative time!!

12 What are my perceptions, views and teaching practices? Before discussing how to become better at teaching and supporting learning of numeracy we need to explore and reflect on our own beliefs and assumptions about the teaching and learning of mathematics/numeracy.

16 Group Creativity Activity  In your group create a poster!!  Show all you know about one of the following topics: –Fractions –Time –Decimals –Rectangles –Probability You might like to have a look round the room for ideas!

19 Promoting and Managing Discussion  Meet Professor Atnas  Story about silence  Group activity:  In pairs or groups discuss the mathematical statements and decide if they are always, sometimes or never true!

20 Why is discussion so rare in Mathematics/numeracy?  Time pressure  Control  Views of learners  Views of mathematics  Views of learning

21 The Great Race  In your group solve the great race problem and report back to the group!  Describe any strategy you used to solve the problem.

22 Professor Atnas Handshakes It is graduation time and there are 8 Professor Atnases! ready to welcome the graduates. As they enter each professor Atnas shakes hands with each of the other professor Atnas. In your group can you work out the total number of handshakes?
