1 African Americans kept their traditions in cooking, smithing, woodcarving, storytelling, and gospel singing.

2 The songs that were made up in the fields to pass the workday developed into a new type of music, gospel. Gospel music combined the two themes of freedom and salvation.

3 Genres…. Urban, Southern, Christian Country, Progressive Southern, Contemporary Christian, Bluegrass Gospel, and Gospel Blues.

4 Being subjected to physical, sexual and emotional abuse at the whims of their captors, the enslaved Africans who eventually created and first sang the spirituals required – above all else – a way to survive their physical and emotional trauma.
