NAME: _________________________________________ Hurricane Planning Exercise  You are the Disaster Emergency Director of Valencia County, a fictitious county along the west coast of Florida. A map of the County is given on the next page. The National Hurricane Center has just issues a hurricane warning for your area, and forecasters say that the eye of Hurricane Robert, a Category-5 storm, will likely pass just north of Orangeville in 22 hours. The forecasted path of the storm is shown in the map as well. Assume that the outer edge of the eye wall of Robert as a radius of 30 km (19 mi). The SLOSH model (a computer model used to estimate what land areas will be affected by a hurricane’s storm surge) predicts that the dark-shaded areas along the coast will be innundated with water. Time for evacuation of the individual communities (in hours) are given next to their names. Primary highways are shown. Based on the forecasted track, answer the following questions. „ Can all the communities be evacuated in time? If not, which one(s) can’t? „ Which community (or communities ) is going to face the worst storm surge? Justify your answer. „ Will the road between Dunhill and High Cumberland remaining open during the storm? „ Which of the communities that cannot be evacuated are you most concerned about? Why? „ If you could have one more primary highway between two cities, what cities would be connected? How would this help?
