3 What are fractions? They are used when we want to count how much of something we have when we don’t have the whole thing. Numerator -------------------- Denominator Represents the number of parts into which the whole has been divided Represents the number of parts of a whole we have.

4 For example: 3434 7 12

5 Remember: A fraction must relate to something to have meaning – what is ½? We need to have ½ of something (the whole) for it to make sense: ½ a cup, ½ a tank of gas, ½ an hour, or ½ an orange
