3 Paper Topic: Culinary Arts Driving Question: Is a career in culinary arts a viable way to earn a living? Thesis: A career in culinary arts is a viable way to earn a living and is an especially important way to help society.

4 Facts... Over the past few centuries, culinary arts have evolved from a necessity of eating into an actual profession. The first culinary arts school began in the 1800s in Boston. Culinary arts were further expanded in 1948 with the first televised cooking show. Today, food television is a multi-billion dollar business. Cooking shows and cookbooks allow the average person a chance to cook elaborate meals.

5 More Facts... Culinary arts schools teach food preparation, food etiquette and restaurant management. All of these are important in order to have a career in culinary arts. Restaurants employ 395,000 people in North Carolina alone, which equals about 10 percent of the state's employed population. The pay for a beginning culinary artist is low and the work is hard (long hours), but after a few years the salary jumps up and so do the benefits.

6 What I've learned... It is more than it meets the eye. It can cost a lot of money to make elaborate meals all the time. It takes a lot of time to plan and shop for fancy meals. There are a lot of neat tricks to learn about frosting a cake.

7 Product... Worked side by side with a professional cake decorator and baker Recreated 2 Asian, Italian, and Spanish cuisines; I made posters on how the cuisines came about and how it connects to art.

9 Mentor I did not have a specific mentor for this project, but I worked side by side with a professional cake decorator and baker for parts of my product. Having a mentor would have helped me with time management and with the supplies for the final product.

Impact on me: It gave me a chance to work with professionals Showed me the background work of baking I got to try food outside of my normal taste Gave me insight on my future career Impact on others: I was able to share my food with my family and friends I can share the information I've learned with others and they can become better cooks

11 Connection... Paper About how culinary arts is not just an art, but a legitimate profession Product I made poster on the cuisines and recreated them.

13 Future Implications This project strengthened my desire to work in culinary arts. I hope to own my own bakery and/or restaurant one day.
