3 OHM BOCES Mission Statement …to coordinate the response of the community’s emerging educational needs and to enable the component school districts to develop and accomplish their missions by providing innovative leadership and unique outcome- based instructional and management services through partnerships with business/industry, state, regional, educational and community-based organizations. 4 OHM BOCES: An overview 24 school districts & ~25,000 students. ~1,800 square miles Population: ~37,600 public & 1,898 non- public Diverse population groups, including rural areas, small villages, and larger towns anchored by the city of Utica

5 O/H SLS: An overview Serves 79 teacher librarians (TLs) Core services: ▫Databases ▫Inter-library loan ▫Unified cataloging ▫Bulk purchasing discounts ▫Workshops and training sessions

7 O/H SLS: Strategic Planning The School Library System’s mission is fourfold: 1.Enable school districts to participate in sharing library resources and support access to information to achieve educational goals 2.Facilitate the teaching of information skills and strategies 3.Provide professional growth and long range planning opportunities 4.Instill the desire for life-long learning (OH School Library System)

9 Project Goals and Outcomes Goal 1: Wiki-riculum will be a key mechanism for information sharing. ▫Outcome 1: TLs will create, edit, share, and discuss plans with others in system easily using the wiki-riculum. ▫Outcome 2: TLs will feel comfortable with what a wiki is and how to use it.

12 Project Goals (cont.) Goal 2: Wiki-riculum will provide a space for networking and ideas. ▫Outcome 1: TLs will acquire knowledge from their peers through the wiki-riculum forum.

13 Project Goals (cont.) Goal 3: Wiki-riculum will be a tool for creating standards-based lesson plans. ▫Outcome 1: TLs will successfully map lesson plans to both AASL and NYS content area standards using the wiki-riculum.

14 Project Goals (cont.) Goal 4: Wiki-riculum will help TLs advocate for their service. ▫Outcome 1: TLs will advocate for their budget requirements such as support staff, professional development, equipment, and collections improvements by using the documentation network on the wiki-riculum.

16 Benefits and Opportunities Wikis maximize interplay; are democratic. Wikis work in real time; text-based. Wikis permit distributed authorship. Wikis promote negotiation; collaborative document editing. Wikis make feedback intensely public and potentially durable; archiving knowledge built over time through versions and groups. 18 Marketing Goals and Outcomes Goal 1: Marketing campaign will encourage users to take the leap into web 2.0 for their professional development and/or curriculum mapping needs. ▫Outcome 1: TL will learn how to use the wiki- riculum effectively. ▫Outcome 2: TLs will bookmark the wiki-riculum as a place to visit regularly.

24 Positioning Statement Users will view the wiki-riculum as a key resource for sharing, discussing, and finding new ways to serve their school communities. Member school librarians will collaborate, share best practices, and discover new ideas for teaching lessons, assisting research efforts, choosing items for collection, and creating displays or websites for their library media centers.

25 Strategies: Capturing the User Desire: Opportunity cost of NOT using the wiki Generic: Wiki as one-stop shop for TLs Enterprise: Local flavor adds value beyond other resource sites like SOS and Discovery Education: Provides easy, convenient continuing education content for TLs Service form: Relevant content, names you can trust
