At the beginning of Reception, children are likely to demonstrate some of the elements within the band for 40-60 months, in addition to all of the elements in the preceding band for 30-50 months. At the end of the Foundation Stage, the children move into Key Stage 1, which has a different assessment framework, and there is no correlation between the two frameworks.

Children should mostly develop the 3 prime areas first as they are most essential for a child’s healthy development and future learning. These are: Communication and language Physical development Personal, social and emotional development.

As children grow, the prime areas will help them to develop skills in 4 specific areas. These are: Literacy Mathematics Understanding the world Expressive arts and design
