Topic 3: DNA Replication and Protein Synthesis Lesson 1: DNA Replication

Concept Map Use the key terms on the graphic organizer provided to create a concept map This assignment will be handed in and checked for completeness, but not marked

Today’s Learning Objectives To learn the process by which DNA replicates within the nucleus of the cell

Today’s Key Terms DNA Replicate Daughter Cells Interphase DNA helicase Unzip DNA polymerase Complementary Pairs Daughter strand Semi-Conservative

DNA Replication In order for cells to divide, DNA must be replicated or reproduced DNA replication must occur so that daughter cells will have exact copies of DNA DNA replication occurs in 3 steps during Interphase

Step 1: Unzipping The enzyme DNA helicase breaks apart the H-bonds between nitrogenous bases This causes the DNA strand to unzip and separate into 2 strands This exposes the nitrogenous bases so they can form new bonds

Step 2: Complimentary Pairing New DNA nucleotides move into the nucleus A new enzyme called DNA polymerase facilitate the bonding of new nucleotides to each of the parent strands

Step 3: Bonding of Nucleotides DNA Polymerase creates bonds between the new nucleotides along the length of the DNA This results in 2 separate strands that have the exact same nucleotide sequence as the original strand

Semi-Conservative Replication DNA replication is said to be semi- conservative This means that the new DNA strands have one strand from the original DNA and a new strand
