w w w. b a l t i c m a s t e r. o r g Can we control the Baltic Sea? Baltic Master aims to improve maritime safety by integrating local and regional perspectives. The focus is on the Baltic Sea Region and issues concerning:  preparedness  prevention  marine spatial planning

w w w. b a l t i c m a s t e r. o r g Partnership 41 partners from seven countries are combining their efforts in Baltic Master. The partnership includes:  national authorities  regional governments  municipalities  institutes of higher education  international organizations  private companies Lead Partner: Region Blekinge, Sweden

w w w. b a l t i c m a s t e r. o r g Project period  1 July 2005 to 31 December 2007 Budget and funding  3.6 million euros, part-financed by the European Union (2.1 million euros of total budget)

w w w. b a l t i c m a s t e r. o r g Background  The Baltic Sea is one of the world’s most heavily trafficked waters.  The export of oil is increasing. The oil is often carried in older vessels where safety is inadequate.  On average, the Baltic Sea is the scene of one major oil-related accident every year.  This environment is fragile with a limited water flow from the Atlantic. It takes 25-30 years to renew the water of the Baltic Sea.  The use of sea and coastal zones is increasing. Shipping, fishing, tourism, offshore wind power plants and other interests are often operating in the same area.

w w w. b a l t i c m a s t e r. o r g Main objectives  To increase the influence of the regional governments and local authorities on matters of maritime safety. The project defines their ability to participate more effectively.  To develop transport and communications within a framework of maritime safety, taking into account the diversity of activities in the Baltic Sea.  To increase preparedness for preventing and managing a catastrophe, through integrating local and regional zones in the planning and implementation processes.
