2. Basic Rights of Students ALL STUDENTS HAVE THE BASIC RIGHT TO AN EMOTIONALLY SAFE AND PHYSICALLY SAFE ENVIRONMENT. Protections (guidelines, laws) are provided to help students be successful in school. Protections make sure that education systems provide equal opportunity for all students to learn. 1. Not be bullied or harassed at school. 2. Not be discriminated against based on race, color, national origin, sex, physical or mental disability, and/or religion, gender identity and expression, socio-economic status, physical appearance and characteristic, and sexual orientation. 3. Not be treated differently, “disparate treatment.” (i.e.: disciplined unfairly) 4. Give your side of the story when you might be suspended. 5. Have your parents informed about you being suspended. 6. Have a copy of the written report if you are suspended. 7. Have educational services when suspended or expelled.
