Anderson County School District #5 Board of Trustees Need for Diffusion of Technology to make IPods part of the Classroom Learning Environment Debra L. Hanks

Today’s technology boom has been explained by the Horizon Report (2009) which states, “For many users, broadband mobile devices like the iPhone have already begun to assume many tasks that were once the exclusive province of portable computers.” This applies to the IPod Touch which has infiltrated into my third grade classroom. The innovation-decision process is on the shoulders of each district. Many types of innovations are free and need only the support of the technology team and teachers in unison. If the Communication channels between the teachers an the team are formed, our district will be moved into and even beyond the other schools within our state, nation, and world. There will be significant change in our students as they connect to the world.

Need: Ipods met the need of music lovers because of their portability. Other digital music players of the past were too big or bulky. Children are motivated by use of Ipods; however, due to restrictions, the diffusion of many worthwhile technological tools have rendered them ineffective and too complicated for practical use. Third grade teachers at VACT, Varennes Academy, have six Ipods each. In order to make them easily used, a movie making program that is compatible is needed. This means a need for the Apple computer for which the Ipod was made. * Other movie making programs are available, but cannot be easily used with the Ipod.

Research: Apple Computer development has made efficient use of the Ipod as a movie making program as well as a music player.

Research: According to GarageBand (2009) Dr. Gerhard Lengeling founded GarageBand to help make the implementation of music technology easy and effective. It as now evolved for use within any classroom.

Research: During his keynote speech at the Macworld Conference & Expo in San Francisco on 6 January 2004, Steve Jobs assisted by musician John Mayer demonstrated the usefulness of the IPod.

Development: One of the problems with GarageBand it is not compatible with Windows; therefore, it can only be used in conjunction with Apple computer products.

Development: The intended audience was any music lover.

Commercialization: The GarageBand product is part of the Apple computer software package. It comes standard on the Apple computer. Ipods are external portable devices that can be used for portability.
