1 The Safe Drinking Water Act Of 1974, 1984, & 1996 Elle Gerleman

2 The purpose is to protect American’s from harmful contaminants in the public’s drinking water. It applies to public water systems which can be either private or publically owned. (Privately owned wells do not apply to the act). Harmful contaminants include: Radionuclides Microbes Organic Chemicals Inorganic Chemicals FUNCTION OF ACT

3 Water is one of the greatest keystones of the environment. As a result, water quality effects health of the people and the success of the economy. It is imperative that we keep our waters clean or else disease will spread throughout all forms of life. ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES AFFECTED

4 EPA has set legal limits for contaminants in drinking water which protect human health. EPA provides a list of acceptable techniques for treating contaminated water. Individual states enforce their own drinking water standards (must be as strong as EPA’s national standard). There are set water-testing schedules and methods that must be followed. EPA also set a maximum contaminant level goal (MCLG). Below this level there is no known or expected risk to health. REGULATION & ENFORCEMENT
