2009 BioEYES Individual Reflection By: Carrie Bidwell Clay High School

The BioEYES Activity My Initial Role I participated in the mating of Zebra fish, the collection of embryos, and the observation of the development of these embryos. My reaction My first experience with this activity was actually in my classroom with my students, so this was my first time doing this lab at Notre Dame. It was interesting to have prior knowledge of this lab and to know what my students struggled with and then to see teachers struggle with the same aspects of the labs that my students also struggled with. New Ideas I am very interested in taking BioEYES to the next level in my high school classroom. I am now aware the middle school teachers will be using this activity from a genetics standpoint. I would like to make BioEYES a more advanced, inquiry based experiment rather than just a genetics activity.

The Modern Lab My Initial Role I participated in the completion of labs arranged by a Notre Dame graduate student and a lead teacher. My reaction I really enjoyed being back in the lab setting. It was amazing to see how much more advanced the lab equipment is. I also enjoyed completing a challenging lab in which I did not know the results before I started. New Ideas I am unsure how I would realistically utilize the two labs we did this week in my classroom, but I am motivated to improve the academic challenges I give my students in the lab setting.

The Pedagogy of BioEYES Session My Initial Role As a teacher who already completed BioEYES in my classroom, I was asked to present my experience to the group. My reaction I enjoyed sharing my experience with other teachers. I also enjoyed learning how other teachers in the area are utilizing BioEYES in their classrooms. I was especially interesting to see what teachers of all levels are doing. New Ideas I am really concerned about the possible repeat of BioEYES that students may experience in their scholastic career. I would like to be part of a group that develops a BioEYES curriculum for all levels.

The Facility/Lab Tours My Initial Role The BioEYES group was give the opportunity to visit four different labs on the Notre Dame campus, including the Radiology Lab with Dr. LaVerne. My Reaction I was aware a large amount of research was taking place at Notre Dame, however, I was ignorant as to the extent and strong academic content of the research. New Ideas The tours have prompted me to want to introduce some of my high school students to the undergraduate and graduate students at Notre Dame and show my students these labs so they can see biology and chemistry in action.
