3 CA State Standards  Number Sense  1.2 Interpret and use ratios in different contexts (e.g., batting averages, miles per hour) to show the relative sizes of two quantities, using appropriate notations (a/b, a to b, a:b).  1.3 Use proportions to solve problems (e.g., determine the value of N if 4/7 = N/21, find the length of a side of a polygon similar to a known polygon). 5 Project Description / Have you ever loved a pet so much that you wanted a statue made of it? Imagine a statue of your pet on the front steps of your home. "Gee, what a wise way to spend hard-earned money," your admiring neighbors would say, or maybe not. In addition to being expensive, these statues would also be heavy. For instance, a 35-lb dog cast in gold would weigh about 670 lb. / You will choose your top 5 favorite mammals to research. From the top 5 mammals you researched, you will choose 1 to build a model, draw a diagram, or create in Google Sketch-up. Your model, diagram, or Google Sketch up must be to scale. You will also find the weight of the different animals and the weight of different metals. Your final project will be an Excel table of the animals with their weights. Any necessary materials for a model or diagram must be provided by the student. It will be due on Friday, March 5,, 2010.
