IRIS-PMG Station, its Significance to Papua New Guinea Mathew Moihoi Geophysical Observatory Geological Survey of Papua New Guinea Managing Waveform Data and related Metadata for Seismic Networks 21-26 October, 2007, PJ Hilton, Petaling Jaya, Malaysia

Contents Location Background/ IRIS-PMG station Instrumentation Installation Data collection/availability Its significance Future plans Concluding remarks Managing Waveform Data and related Metadata for Seismic Networks 21-26 October, 2007, PJ Hilton, Petaling Jaya, Malaysia

Location IRIS-PMG station is located in the city of Port Moresby It is built on a hard rock foundation PMG

Background PMG station was first established in March 1957 Seismic recordings commenced in December 1957 only for local monitoring purpose Station data became available to global scientific community in 1967 when World-Wide Standardized Seismographic Network (WWSSN) commenced Records were captured on photographic papers and hot pen paper recorders Managing Waveform Data and related Metadata for Seismic Networks 21-26 October, 2007, PJ Hilton, Petaling Jaya, Malaysia

source: http://volvano.und.nodak.edu PNG TECTONIC SETTING Primarily consisting of two major plates and three sub-plates interacting amongst each other These complex tectonic interactions result in the generation of the active seismic zones in the region Volcanic activities are also very active in the region

Data source: NEIC + PMGO Distribution of earthquakes

Seismicity and plate boundaries Seismicity with the generalized plate tectonic configuration Pacific Plate South Bismarck Plate Solomon Sea Plate North Bismarck Plate Australian Plate Managing Waveform Data and related Metadata for Seismic Networks 21-26 October, 2007, PJ Hilton, Petaling Jaya, Malaysia

IRIS-PMG Station Operations commenced in October 1993 Is a joint venture cooperation between “IRIS/USGS – GEOFON – POSEIDON” Near real-time data transmission accessibility to global scientific community Was certified as one of the auxiliary stations for CTBTO operation in May 2004 Currently being utilized also by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre (PTWC) and Japan Metrological Agency (JMA) for tsunami monitoring in the Pacific Ocean Managing Waveform Data and related Metadata for Seismic Networks 21-26 October, 2007, PJ Hilton, Petaling Jaya, Malaysia

Instrumentation The station is equipped with IRIS-2 type station configuration consisting of; STS-1 type Seismometers IRIS-2 type Data loggers 9-channel Quanterra data acquisition (DA) unit Station data processor (DP) with 400MB disk space x2 150MB QIC cartridge tape drives Managing Waveform Data and related Metadata for Seismic Networks 21-26 October, 2007, PJ Hilton, Petaling Jaya, Malaysia

Installation Installation of the instrumentation is placed inside a seismic vault The sensors are placed in a separate chamber The data logger and other accessories placed in another chamber Managing Waveform Data and related Metadata for Seismic Networks 21-26 October, 2007, PJ Hilton, Petaling Jaya, Malaysia

The vault Vault Entrance Sensor Room Data acquisition room CTBTO Instrumentation

Data Collection & Availability The station uses a quanterra Q680 digitizer as the main acquisition unit Data are also stored on a disk drive and two retrieval tape drive cartridges There is also an On-line data availability There are also various IDC’s where data are available and can be retrieve for use Managing Waveform Data and related Metadata for Seismic Networks 21-26 October, 2007, PJ Hilton, Petaling Jaya, Malaysia

Its Significance The station helps supplement PNG’s local earthquake monitoring capacity The station is used as a reference station for local station network configuration One of the strategically located IMS auxiliary stations for CTBTO operations Data available online all the time Managing Waveform Data and related Metadata for Seismic Networks 21-26 October, 2007, PJ Hilton, Petaling Jaya, Malaysia

Its Significance (cont.) The station is providing earthquake data for rapid preliminary location of significant local events For major earthquakes, this has enable authorities to make necessary decision to either issue earthquake/tsunami warning pending PTWC tsunami bulletin to the general public Managing Waveform Data and related Metadata for Seismic Networks 21-26 October, 2007, PJ Hilton, Petaling Jaya, Malaysia

Future Plans  To maintain the station efficiently at all times for the benefit of all  To tie the station into ATWS network currently in progress for tsunami monitoring in the South West Pacific  May be to tie the station with IOTWC as well !!!  To re-equip and upgrade where necessary Managing Waveform Data and related Metadata for Seismic Networks 21-26 October, 2007, PJ Hilton, Petaling Jaya, Malaysia

Concluding Remarks  The station has and will continue to provide data for continuous local earthquake monitoring for the benefit of the people of PNG  The station will continue to be utilized by various scientific community to better improve knowledge in global seismology  The station will continue to provide data for local, regional and global hazard mitigation strategies through various research activities  The station will continue to be utilized by the IMS for CTBTO activities Managing Waveform Data and related Metadata for Seismic Networks 21-26 October, 2007, PJ Hilton, Petaling Jaya, Malaysia

Acknowledgement IRIS-GSN for putting up the station IRIS-USGS/ASL for maintaining the station IRIS-GEOFON-POSEIDON for the joint cooperation and the interest in the initial set up of the station CTBTO/GCI for various station support Managing Waveform Data and related Metadata for Seismic Networks 21-26 October, 2007, PJ Hilton, Petaling Jaya, Malaysia

Damages caused by the 2002 September 08 magnitude 7.8 earthquake near Wewak, ESP Damaged water pipe, Wewak, ESP Cracked runway at Boram airport, Wewak, ESP Totally collapsed house at Lemieng, Aitape, Sandaun
