2  First, create a full sentence preparation outline  After becoming comfortable with that outline create a shorter speaking outline  Outlines are formal constructs Chapter Nine - Outlining OUTLINING PRINCIPLES

3  Are brief statements about the speech’s goals  Three basic types of general purpose statements  To inform  To persuade  To celebrate Chapter Nine - Outlining GENERAL PURPOSE STATEMENTS

4  A more narrow version of the general purpose statement  The specific purpose statement needs an action verb  Informative speech: “To learn…”  Persuasive speech: “To believe…”  Epideictic speech: “To remember…” Chapter Nine - Outlining SPECIFIC PURPOSE STATEMENTS
