Diving: What do we picture? Scuba diving, fat man flying off a cliff, diving boards at pool, etc. Underwater caves, big sharks and coral The Basics:  Wet Diving (scuba, deep sea and deep freshwater)  Dry diving (breath holding, shallow, snorkeling)  Most popular: Scuba diving

Purpose of Diving as a discourse community X Factor- the purpose of diving is to expand our knowledge of the world underwater and experience something that is uncommon to a lot of people.  By researching diving, we can learn and understand why it is known to be a popular sport and what its purposes are.

Background While diving didn’t hit its full popularity until the 1960’s, it is dated back to early civilization. Ancient divers would use fundamental things such as reeds and tortoise goggles in order to enhance their ability underwater amidst holding their breath. Between 1942 and 1946, Jacques-Yves Cousteau (a French naval lieutenant) and Emile Gagnan (an engineer) developed the Aqua Lung; a device which used pressure valves to deliver properly pressurized air only when the diver breathed in. Over the next two decades experimental dives with the Aqua Lung proved its reliability and in the 1960's "sport diving" was born

Equipment Overview (mention lexis)

Diving Lexis The special lexis for this community is uniquely sign language. Both in and out of water, sign language is used to communicate with those that can’t hear and/or speak. This is true for the deaf, mute, and all divers. Water limits one to only being able to see and slightly hear so sign language is extremely important and universal for all divers because it is a straight formed language, there are no dialect barriers.

Methods and Data Lots of Interviews from the Upchurch family which consists of 3 certified scuba divers, and 1 dive master all trained by PADI (Professional Association of Scuba Divers). Personal experience

Location: Deep Sea (bora bora shallow dry dive)

Location: Deep Sea (Molokini- wet diving scuba)

Location: Freshwater (Capo D’Acqua, Italy)

Location: Freshwater (Andros Island, Bahamas sits pooled ontop salt)

Upchurch Family (Disney Epcott)

Conclusion/Analysis: Many people oppose diving because there are the select few that harm the coral and fish ecosystem however, there are so many medical and experience benefits one can receive from diving. Most like the idea of it and would like to try it, but stay away a bit because it is expensive (around $200 per person).
