2 EXAM PROCEDURES 10 minutes to review project before starting 60 minutes to complete the exam In this presentation, suggested timing guidelines are assigned to each step –Use these as a guide to indicate how far along in the project you should be at each step. –Consider practicing and re-doing steps for which you do not complete within the timing guideline. 2

3 10-MINUTE EXAM REVIEW PERIOD Read the Background Information and Project Statement sections of the instructions. Look over the tables to get an idea of what kind of data is being used in this project. The slides of this presentation will serve as a guideline to completing the project. 3 Time: 10 minutes

4 STEP 1: DOWNLOAD XML FILES Access the XML files at the following URL: http://cs101.wvu.edu/resources/exam /review-projects/ http://cs101.wvu.edu/resources/exam /review-projects/ Exam review: Know what to do in downloading and know that if the contents are zipped, they must be extracted. 4 Time: 2 minutes

5 STEP 2: CREATE A NEW WORKBOOK Know how to start Microsoft Excel Be able to save your workbook and supply the indicated filename. 5 Time: 2 minutes

6 STEP 3: ADJUSTING SHEETS Excel workbooks come with one default sheet Know how to work with sheets: –Creating new –Renaming –Deleting –Moving Also, understand how to navigate sheet tabs 6 Time: 1 minutePoints: 3 points total

7 STEP 4: IMPORT XML FILES Know how to import XML files. Be sure to verify the data imported fully. 7 Time: 2 minutesPoints: 5 points

8 STEPS 5A-F: FORMATTING AND SORTING Know how to add and delete columns and rows. Be able to apply formatting styles. Know how to apply cell formatting settings. –Number types –Merging cells –Centering cell content –Adjusting cell width and height Be able to sort data. 8 Time: 6 minutesPoints: 5 points total

9 STEPS 6A-D: SIMPLE FORMULAS Be able to convert a provided algebraic formula into a formula in Excel. VERY IMPORTANT: –Understand (and how to use) different kinds of cell references: Absolute Reference Mixed Reference Relative Reference 9 Time: 4 minutesPoints: 5 points total

10 STEP 6E: IF() STATEMENTS Know how to use an IF() statement. –3 parts: test, true value, false value Be able to nest multiple IF() statements inside each other to handle multiple cases. –If the first test is true/false, try a second test. Each additional nested IF() statement allows for one additional condition to be tested. 10 Time: 6 minutesPoints: 5 points

11 STEP 6F: TOTAL ROW The total row allows you to perform quite summary calculations (sum, maximum, average, etc.) on columns within your table. Be able to perform these calculations. 11 Time: 2 minutesPoints: 2.5 points

12 STEP 6G: CELL REFERENCES Cell references affect what happens when a formula is copied to a new location: Relative ( N4 ): Column and row updated Column-absolute ( $N4 ): Row updated Row-absolute ( N$4 ): Column updated Fully absolute ( $N$4 ): Nothing updated 12 Time: 5 minutesPoints: 12.5 points total

13 STEP 7: CONDITIONAL FORMATTING Be able to apply color scale-style conditional formatting to cell ranges. Know how to specify conditional formatting settings to be applied depending upon cell value. 13 Time: 2 minutesPoints: 9.5 points total

14 STEP 8: PIVOTCHARTS AND PIVOTTABLES Understand: –All PivotCharts have an associated PivotTable –How to create a new PivotChart and PivotTable Know how to work with PivotTables –Adding to fields, summarizing figures –Using the filters, and the “Group by” feature Know how to work with PivotCharts –PivotCharts are charts, too –Know how to work with chart labels, axis labels, etc. –Know how to format axes; rotating, etc. 14 Time: 5 minutesPoints: 15 points total

15 STEP 9: CHARTS Understand: –Create different types of charts –Identify axes of charts and what is being plotted as data Know how to add appropriate labels –Charts need labels and titles –Know how to add them –Know what appropriate labels are Know how to add trendlines –Understand R-squared value –Understand forecasting (predicting future/past values) 15 Time: 5 minutesPoints: 12.5 points total

16 STEP 10: FORMAT ANALYSIS QUESTIONS Be able to use cell formatting tools to format the Analysis Questions sheet. –Cell width and height –Vertical alignment –Bolding text –Wrapping text 16 Time: 3 minutesPoints: 5 points total

17 STEP 11: ANALYSIS QUESTIONS Analysis questions are worth 20%! –If you’re running short on time, try to at least get these done since they’re worth a lot of points. 17 Time: 12 minutesPoints: 5 points each

18 SUBMIT YOUR PROJECT Finally, submit your files like any other project. Close Excel before submitting your project. 18 Time: 3 minutes
