(Deut. 7; Matt. 4; Is. 30) “Repudiating Sin”

What were the Israelites to do? Deuteronomy 7:1-6: Conquer, utterly destroy, show no mercy; Do not inter-marry; Completely destroy any semblance of idolatry! Deuteronomy 7:25-26: Do not covet the precious metals; You shall utterly detest it and abhor it. Deuteronomy 6:10-16: Beware, fear, serve… Consider 6:13 & 7:25-26 together.

What did Jesus say? Then Jesus said to him, "Away with you, Satan! For it is written, 'You shall worship the L ORD your God, and Him only you shall serve.' " [ Matt 4:10 (NKJV) Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. Matt 4:10 (KJV) Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. Matt 4:10 (ASV) Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “ ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’ ” Matt 4:10 (ESV) Jesus told the devil, “Away with you, Satan” and then quoted Deuteronomy 6:13.

What hard lessons did the Israelites have to learn? You will also defile the covering of your graven images of silver, And the ornament of your molded images of gold. You will throw them away as an unclean thing; You will say to them, "Get away!" Isaiah 30:22 (NKJV) Ye shall defile also the covering of thy graven images of silver, and the ornament of thy molten images of gold: thou shalt cast them away as a menstruous cloth; thou shalt say unto it, Get thee hence. Isaiah 30:22 (KJV) And ye shall defile the overlaying of thy graven images of silver, and the plating of thy molten images of gold: thou shalt cast them away as an unclean thing; thou shalt say unto it, Get thee hence. Isaiah 30:22 (ASV) Then you will defile your carved idols overlaid with silver and your gold- plated metal images. You will scatter them as unclean things. You will say to them, “Be gone!” Isaiah 30:22 (ESV) Consider the context of the chapter…

We MUST see the connection with sin! There is a great effort made in our society to excuse whatever sin is committed. (“Born that way, rough upbringing, etc.”) The Corinthians had practiced every sort of sin, but they had also given them up… Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God. 1 Cor 6:9-11 (NKJV)

One way to repudiate sin is to learn to value and welcome God’s way! One thing I have desired of the L ORD, That will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the L ORD All the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the L ORD, And to inquire in His temple. Psalms 27:4 (NKJV) 1John 1:1-4: The Word of life was manifested so that we can learn the way God would have us to live!

One way to repudiate sin is to learn to value and welcome God’s way! Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need. Eph 4:28 (NKJV) For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality; 1 Thess 4:3 (NKJV) Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul, 12 having your conduct honorable among the Gentiles, that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may, by your good works which they observe, glorify God in the day of visitation. 1 Peter 2:11-12 (NKJV) And the L ORD commanded us to observe all these statutes, to fear the L ORD our God, for our good always, that He might preserve us alive, as it is this day. Deut 6:24 (NKJV)

Do NOT deal with forbidden things casually!!! Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am tempted by God"; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. 14 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. 15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. James 1:13-15 (NKJV) Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world--the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life--is not of the Father but is of the world. 17 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever. 1 John 2:15-17 (NKJV)

Do NOT deal with forbidden things casually!!! Nor shall you bring an abomination into your house, lest you be doomed to destruction like it. You shall utterly detest it and utterly abhor it, for it is an accursed thing. Deut 7:26 (NKJV) Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good. Romans 12:9 (NKJV)

Learn to Repudiate Sin! Learn of its consequences… The wages of sin is death (Rom. 6:23). Separation from God (Isa. 59:1-2). Eternal punishment in hell (Matt. 25:46). Each of us has known the defilement and guilt that comes along with sin. Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. James 4:7 (NKJV) …Away with you, Satan!...

Matthew 11:28-30 (NKJV) “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light."
