Prejudice: Prejudice is a rigid and unfair generalization about an entire category of people Stereotype: An exaggerated description applied to every person in some category

18 Race and Ethnicity What is race? Socially constructed category of people who share biologically transmitted traits that members of a society consider important What is ethnicity ? A shared cultural heritage such as ancestry, language, or religion What is racism? The belief that one racial category is innately superior or inferior to another

19 Cycle of Prejudice Stage 1: Prejudice begins as an attempt to justify economic exploitation or ethnocentrism Stage 2: Prejudice and discrimination results in minorities as a socially disadvantaged group and low in the system of social stratification. Stage 3: Social disadvantage results and is justified as evidence of innate inferiority and not related to prior deliberate prejudice and discrimination thus unleashing renewed prejudice by which the cycle repeats itself.
