12 What We Know:  This is about changing instruction.  Teaching and assessing will look different.  We have to raise expectations for all kids!  GOOD NEWS- Our district has already been working toward these goals!!

15 This Change is a System in Evolution…not a Revolution!  Expect changes to occur as we move through the process  There is not a ‘canned curriculum’ for implementing the Common Core Standards  All districts in the states that have adopted Common Core Standards will be/or have been doing this work  Our prior mapping work will facilitate the process

16 What we know:  ISAT & PSAE will be used until 2014  Pilot items from Common Core will likely be incorporated into ISAT beginning in 2012  Schools/Districts need to make strategic decisions about balancing instruction between the ‘97 ILSLS & CCSS  Common Core State Standards are more rigorous than the ‘97 ILSLS—particularly in math & writing  Standards will be forthcoming across other content areas soon-Science (Fall 2012)

19 District Plan  Engage in analysis of Common Core State Standards and their impact on your instruction  Work within grade level teams/content area to prioritize CCSS, links standards with units of study, prepare pacing guides, and begin constructing “Unit Planning Organizers”  Literacy Emphasis in non-core subject areas  Adjust instruction as needed to implement Common Core Standards—NOW, this school year!  Professional development/teacher collaboration targeted at supporting these processes

20 What can I do tommorrow?  Post Content Targets and Language Targets (Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening) in Your Classroom  Begin applying the ELA and Math Practice Standards in our classrooms  All teachers promote the use of the 6+1 Trait Language scoring guides in your teacher feedback to students about their writing  Use the 6+1 Traits of writing in their assessment practices  Use the Lucy Calkins writing workshop instructional framework materials to guide your writing instructional practices  Teachers will begin the process of creating “Units of Study” for writing and math based on the Common Core Standards. This is an MES and MHS initiative

21 Posting Content and Language Targets Math Content Target Language Target  Solve word problems that call for addition of three whole numbers whose sum is less than or equal to 20  Determine the unknown whole number in an addition or subtraction equation relating to three whole numbers.  Ask and answer questions about unknown words in a text.  Write a letter or letters for most consonant and short-vowel sounds.  Read and comprehend complex literary and informational texts independently and proficiently
