1 Stream Quality Metric Ted Graham RMS Meeting June 8, 2009

2 Greater Washington 2050 A regional initiative Improve the quality of life for Washington area residents in the next 50 years Fostering stronger regional awareness, leadership and action today and in the next few years.

3 Environmental Goals We seek to maximize protection and enhancement of the Region’s environmental resources by meeting and exceeding standards for our air, water, and land. We seek preservation and enhancement of our Region’s open space, green space, and wildlife reserves.

4 (Draft) Environmental Targets The National Capital region establishes a target of 50% of all [sentinel] watersheds will be in good or excellent condition by 2050 The National Capital Region achieves 100% of Chesapeake Bay Goals by 2050 Others possibilities: Forest Coverage Planned WWTP capacity remaining Water conservation (per capita usage) Air quality (number of days failing to meet federal AQ standards)

5 Focus on Watersheds Consider two examples: Montgomery County Assessment by UMCES

7 Bay Watershed Benthic Macroinvertebrate Some coverage in each of the COG jurisdictions Direct measure of environmental condition Based on state & local sources

8 Discussion Definition of excellent, good, etc. Data to draw on: State Local Academic Watershed organization Identification of sentinel watersheds
