The study of life
2
Living Organisms List the characteristics of life Cellular Organization Reproduction Metabolism Homeostasis Heredity Responsiveness Interdependence (Growth and Development)
3
Cellular Organization All living things are made up of one or more cells A cell is the smallest unit capable of all life functions Ex. Humans are made of more than 100 trillion cells Ex. Paramecium is a single-celled organism
4
Reproduction All living things can reproduce Reproduction is the process by which organisms make more of their own kind from one generation to the next *Reproduction is not necessary for the survival of an individual, but for the survival of a species
5
Metabolism Living organisms use energy to grow, move, and process information This energy is obtained from many different chemical reactions Metabolism is the sum of all of the chemical reactions carried out in an organism
6
Homeostasis Living organisms must maintain a stable internal environment in order to function properly Homeostasis is the process of maintaining a stable internal environment in spite of changes in the external environment Examples Hot outside = We sweat Cold outside = We shiver
7
Heredity All living things are able to pass on traits to their offspring through genes Genes are the basic unit of heredity and determine an organisms traits Heredity is the passing of traits from parent to offspring
8
Responsiveness The diversity of living organisms is a result of the responsiveness of an organism to their environment Evolution is also a result of the responsiveness of organisms Evolution is change in the inherited characteristics of species over generations Species is a group of genetically similar organisms that can produce fertile offspring *similar not identical
9
Interdependence Living organisms are interdependent because they depend on one another and their environment
