Explain using diagrams and examples what the following mean? Atom Molecule Element Compound Mixture

Atom This is the simplest building block and can not be broken down any further. Hydrogen (H2) - is made up of two hydrogen atoms bonded together. Oxygen (O2) - is made up of two oxygen atoms bonded together Molecule This when two or more atoms are bonded together in a fixed ratio. Water (H2O) - two hydrogen atoms bonded to one oxygen, Oxygen (O2) - two oxygen atoms bonded. The diagram shows an aspirin molecule

Element These are made up of one type of atom chemically bonded together. All elements are found in the periodic table and represented by a capital letter. Magnesium - Mg made of magnesium atoms Lead - Pb made of lead atoms

Compounds are made up of two or more elements chemically bonded together in a fixed ratio. They can be broken down to simpler substances by heating and electrolysis.

Mixture This is when two or more substances are not chemically bonded together and can be separated by physical methods e.g distillation, filtration etc E.g A gin and tonic is a mixture because the alcohol is not bonded with water
