3 Services provided by EMAS include: Paramedic services at scene and medical emergencies Emergency care and transport of patients Diagnosis and treatment or referral for minor illnesses and injuries Specialist patient transport – PTS Specialist training for the public – first aid Emergency planning and civil protection services OVERVIEW OF EMAS

5 Equality Training had to: Meet statutory and regularity requirements Cover all policy areas Be suitable for a mobile 24/7 service Suitable for all levels of staff – different KSF outlines (demands) Provide knowledge, understanding and confidence to take action. Behavioural change Be cost effective, deliverable and still maintain service demands

6 Level 1 Basic Knowledge for ALL To support equality and Diversity Level 2 Challenging Legal Requirements Acknowledge difference Recognise Discrimination Dignity and Respect Recognise and Report behaviour that does not show E+D Recognition of Own and others behaviour and its effects. Take action when it undermines E+D Respect Difference Acknowledge peoples beliefs, preferences and choices Level 3 Promoting E+D Evaluates legislation, policies and procedures against culture and environment in own sphere. Look for Patterns of discrimination Enable others to promote E+D. Supports People to exercise their rights Level 4 Develop an E+D Culture Promote, Support, Challenge. Resolve complaints. 10 Pilot site – Lincolnshire >800 staff Fits across level 1 KSF outline Run from September 06 – September 07 On line or workbook - identical Given 4 hours ‘work time’ to complete Assessment at the end - on line or via free phone telephone – test the same. Could take the test twice.

11 Evaluation Monitoring Monthly reports given with breakdown of results – attempts at the test etc We issued Grass Roots Certificates Problems –ICT, although could be accessed from any internet connection –Time off duty to complete, various approaches –Some dyslexia issues

12 On Line version Of those that registered 70% took the test and passed. Book Version Of those that registered 98% took the test and 98% passed the test. 60% of all staff passed using the on line version and 13% passed using the workbook version Anomalies 7 Managers evaluated content but took no test 1 registered for both! 86% of total staff registered for On Line version 14% of total staff registered for the Workbook Option Results

16 Next steps ‘Grass Roots’ package adopted by NHS Core Learning Unit – SHA funded Roll out to all EMAS employees – ‘essential’ training Ensure picked up in Performance and Development Review Information captured on E2Ttrain (LMS) to monitor progress
