3  Five Act Structure: Purpose of Act II  Action is taken on the central argument or conflict.  Primary Setting:  Verona, Italy  Time Period:  16 th Century

4 Literary Terms:  Foreshadowing  Refers to hints in the text about what will occur later in the plot.  Examples:  Act II:iii-Friar Lawrence’s discussion about the healing and hurtful powers of herbs.  Act II:vi-Friar Lawrence’s comment about the Heavens smiling on this act of marriage, so sorrow will not come later.

5 Literary Terms:  When a character/audience member knows information characters in the play are unaware of.  Examples:  Juliet is unaware Romeo is listening to her while she is on the balcony.  Friar Lawrence is willing to marry Romeo and Juliet secretly

6 Literary Terms:  Soliloquy: (three components)  1.a character is alone on stage  2.reveals inner thoughts and feelings  3.done in a lengthy speech  Example:  Juliet’s balcony scene Act II:ii-she reveals her true love for Romeo and her willingness to give up her name/family for him.

7 Act I Quotes (6 total)  “See how she leans her cheek upon her hand!/O that I were a glove upon that hand,/That I might touch that cheek!”  RomeoAct II: ii Lines 23-25  “O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo?/Deny thy father and refuse they name!/Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love,/ And I’ll no longer be a Capulet.”  Juliet Act II: ii Lines 35-38 (soliloquy)

11 Revenge: -Tybalt’s pride hurt at the feast by Capulet Love, so he has sent a letter to duel with Romeo Love: -Love at first sight -Taking risks/chances to encourage love -Friar Lawrence -True love vs. infatuation

12 What is the purpose of the prologue? What information does it reveal to the audience? At the start of Act II, what has Romeo done to his friends, Mercutio and Benvolio? Why? Briefly paraphrase the main actions of the infamous balcony scene.

13 Juliet sends the nurse to speak to Romeo. What message does she give to him? Juliet is eager for the return of the nurse after she speaks with Romeo. Why does the nurse withhold information from her instead of giving her the news right away?

14 Friar Lawrence compares the herbs that he works with to people. Explain this comparison. Explain Friar Lawrence’s attitude about marrying Romeo and Juliet? Why does he agree to help?
