Launch: No Ipods! Silently answer the following question. Where Mr. Moos is from, its common to measure the distance to a lightning strike by counting “one Mississippi, two Mississippi... and so on.” Every five seconds between a lightning flash and the following thunder equals one mile of distance. Estimate the speed of sound in meters per second using this rule.

Quiz

Cops and Robbers One car (the bank robber’s car), traveling 0.1 m/s, is 2 meters in front of another car (the cop car), traveling 0.2 m/s. How far will both cars have traveled when the cop car catches up with the bank robber’s car?

Discussion Question 1 An automobile traveling 95km/h overtakes a 1.10- km-long train traveling in the same direction on a track parallel to the road. If the train's speed is 75km/h, how long does it take the car to pass it, and how far will the car have traveled in this time?

Discussion Question A bowling ball traveling with constant speed hits the pins at the end of a bowling lane 16.5m long. The bowler hears the sound of the ball hitting the pins 2.50s after the ball is released from his hands. What is the speed of the ball (the speed of sound in air is 340 m/s)

Captain America Train Scene

Captain America?! More like Captain Physics! Captain America says they have about “a 10 second window” to land on a 0.14 km long train. The train is “moving like the devil” which I assume to be 55 km/hr. If Captain America slides at a constant rate of 5 km/hr, was he correct in his prediction? (assume they both move in the x direction, and Captain America begins his slide at the same moment the front of the train passes him)
