2. 2 High Level Goals To create a culture of innovation and research in the Gresham-Barlow Community Written by Kathy Childress, Sam Mershon, Stephen Scannell 2010 Intel Educator Academy Long term goals –Ensure that every student has the opportunity to participate in an authentic research experience. –Celebrate research through Gresham-Barlow Science Expo: a community experience. –Develop and support a staff culture that embraces research. Short term goals –Provide professional development supporting teacher engagement and skills in facilitating student research utilizing Web 2.0. –All students grades 9-10 to complete a science research project with a total of 100 projects qualifying for the regional fair. –Partner with local business and the Gresham- Barlow Education Foundation to create local awards and partial sponsorship.

3. 3 Year 1 Objectives Written by Kathy Childress, Sam Mershon, Stephen Scannell 2010 Intel Educator Academy 100 projects at the regional science expo; 10 projects at the State Fair; one project at the ISEF in year one. Three or more community businesses committed up to $750. At least 10 members of the community participate in regional expo as judges. Increased number of students involved in ASE, summer research or extension opportunities. At least four teachers from Gresham, two science teachers from Barlow, and one additional curriculum teacher from each building taking part in ongoing PLC. (12 hours per year) Develop credit by proficiency model based on scientific research project.

Meet with building and district administration to gain support and approval. They buy in, support us with.17 FTE for PD (professional development) developer and Fair Directorship. AllMay 2010 This was done in May and approved. Unfortunately, on June 10, 2010 a 9% budget cut of state funding was announced. Due to this budget cut, this.17 FTE was cut from the school budget. We are supporting the Fair Directorship with a stipend. PD developer role has been scaled back. Secure fundingFunded:Steve and KathyMay 2010 Received $15,000 from the Intel Community grant to support the Gresham-Barlow Science Expo, fund the Director stipend and support teacher professional development. Recruit TeachersMinimum number of teachers from each building agree. Steve, Kathy, Sam, TimJune 2010 5 science teachers from Gresham High School (GHS~1800 student population) 4 teachers from Sam Barlow High School, 3 science and 1 pro-tech (SBHS ~1800 student population) 1 science teacher from Springwater Trail High School (STHS ~170 student population)

The complete curriculum will be compiled from these “lessons” and resources through the February meeting times. Purchase teacher computers, set-up collaboration web site, (moodle, google docs, Intel) Completed.SteveAugust 2010 Due to a change in the budget due to school district budget cuts, teacher computers were not purchased. A google group and google site has been established, and weblinks-resources are attached to that site. Community Support: Solicit support for local awards at fair; Gresham Barlow Ed Foundation 3 Businesses support; GBEF grant $1000. SteveNovember 2010 ON Semiconductor ON Semiconductor, through their Gresham, Oregon site, has provided the following support. 1- hosted a plant tour and meeting with Science Expo Professional Learning Community (October 2010), has donated $3000 to be used to support student projects ($1500) and to support the Gresham-Barlow Science Expo ($1500), will assist in recruiting judges and volunteers for the GBSE from their Gresham plant.

6. Update on Professional Development Group- From Good To Great Planning Team: Stephen Scannell, Kathy Childress Team Members: SWTHS: 1 science, GHS: 5 science, SBHS: 3 Science, 1 Pro-tech Meetings 1x/month. August 25 Sept 20, Oct 22, Next meetings Nov 30, January 13. 10/22 Lunch and tour to ON Semiconductor. They have donated $3000 to the science fair. $1500 to support student projects, $1500 to support the fair. 9 (5 PDG-4 from GHS Math Dept) teachers attended. It was a very positive tour and meeting and hopefully some further partnerships/mentoring will develop. Additional Support: Portland State University is offering a research class, Natural Science Inquiry (4 hrs quarter hours) for juniors and senior students who are doing a science fair project.
