2  Is a subject pronoun.  Who or what the sentence is about (the person or thing that is doing or being something)  Usually comes at the beginning of a sentence.  Who just came in the door?  Who gave that to you?

3  Is an object pronoun.  Usually follows a preposition (to, for, from, with) as object of the preposition. ◦ To whom are you referring? ◦ You loaned your book to whom?

4  It can also be the direct or indirect object (the person or thing that is having something done to it). ◦ Whom should I take to dinner tonight? ◦ I saw someone whom I had met before.

5  The easiest way to test whether who or whom is correct, is to substitute.  Who = he  Whom = him  Sometimes you will also need to turn a question around into a statement.
