2 ET # 53: What is the difference between a disease causing agent and a disease vector? A disease causing agent is the thing that actually gets inside and causes the disease: Examples: Viruses Bacteria Nematodes (worm-like, ex. hookworms, tape worms, heart worms) Protists (various single-celled protozoans)

3 A disease vector is the living thing that spreads or transmits the disease (but doesn’t cause the disease: Examples: Mosquitoes Rats/mice Ticks Birds Humans!

4 ET # 53: List all of the ways infectious diseases are transmitted. droplet contact - coughing or sneezing on another person direct physical contact - touching an infected person, including sexual contact indirect contact - touching a contaminated surface (ex. door knob, faucet) airborne transmission - if the microorganism can remain in the air for long periods fecal-oral transmission - from contaminated food or water sources vector borne transmission - carried by insects or other animals
