Issues & Ethics Jaime Bahder

Copyright Definition - the exclusive right to make copies, license, and otherwise exploit a literary, musical, or artistic work, whether printed, audio, video, etc.: works granted such right by law on or after January 1, 1978, are protected for the lifetime of the author or creator and for a period of 50 years after his or her death. (

Important Copyright FACTS
Work created by employees of the federal government as a part of their job is in the public domain, not protected by copyright. The "fair use" exemption to copyright law was created to allow things such as commentary, parody, news reporting, research and education about copyrighted works without the permission of the author. Teachers and students can use copyrighted material legally without permission from the author if it falls under fair use in education. Factors of fair use: purpose, nature, amount used and effect on market. Copyright protection cannot exist for an idea, procedure, process, system, method of operation, concept, principle, or discovery, regardless of the form in which it is described.

Digital Divide Definition - the gap between those who have computers with Internet access and those who do not, as well as the gap between those who are computer literate and those who are not

Important FACTS Even in kindergarten and first grade classrooms, minority children from families of lower socioeconomic status (SES) are less likely to attend schools that provide computer access in their classrooms than children in the highest SES groups. Upper-to-middle classes have high-quality access to digital technology because the profit motive pushes technologists to work hard at creating "solutions" designed specifically for them. Approaches to close divide: The direct approach will be for governments and businesses to work together to change the incentives that shape digital markets. The indirect approach will be for them to team up on e-government digital technology initiatives that extend rural health care and quality education to the poor.

Gender Issues Definition – In the case of education, the level of difference between males and females and their abilities to learn as individuals.

Important Facts The AAUW recommends encouraging girls to tinker for artistic and creative work and to use the computer across the curriculum. Educators should choose engaging, relevant subjects and undertakings to attract girls and other "nontraditional" users. Educators and the population need to make women and girls more comfortable in the culture of technology, emphasizing relationships with technology regardless of eventual occupational, social, or family goals. To help with the gap, we should integrate technology into more club activities, not just computer clubs.

Internet Safety You Tube video on Internet Safety

Important Facts Schools and divisions are required to establish guidelines for appropriate technology use. Depending upon the ages of your children, set rules about downloading of files, that can be opened and sent, sites that may and may not be visited, appropriate language to use online, whether photos and files may be uploaded, filling out forms on sites, online shopping, etc. Internet browsers can be configured to only allow children to visit sites that are rated at the level that the parents specify. To post personally identifiable student information that is not directory information, schools must obtain parental consent.
