.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Great student interaction, allows for an alternative learning experience. Mrs. Bell and Mrs. Sabatini were great strengths to the distance learning program!! - Coordination with T.A. from the other school, Mrs. Vellucci was fantastic. Distance learning is very advantageous to smaller schools. Many course electives are available to smaller districts who otherwise would not be able to offer these selections. - Courses become available to students who are interested and want to study particular academic interests. Sharing and meeting others with knowledge and experience about various topics. - Students from different parts of the state learning together. Most of the items I need for instruction were at my fingertips (computer for documents, internet, Elmo, VHS/DVD, etc.) DL allows students access to content they otherwise would not have. DL allows schools to deal with the elective issue by offering electives even though classes and teachers are being cut. 1. What are the strengths of distance Learning? Comments

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Trying to conduct creative projects with lots of materials is very difficult. Occasionally not being able to hear or a high pitch sound, but they were fixed after a phone call. If the person is not trained at the remote site in the equipment, student management and problem solving this can be a negative experience. It has been sad to see the decline of importance placed on DL at a certain remote site, with a new aide and new school employee who was not even assigned to the class for the full class time. As a teacher, I cant look at everything they are doing on their papers, worksheets etc. Hard for any one on one (private) time during class. Hard to help those who have missed classes. No after school. Some games/activities cannot be done as a whole group. Difficult to complete hands-on projects. Marketing is especially difficult but we made it work. 2. What are the weaknesses of Distance Learning? Comments

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Training. I didn’t receive formal training prior to the school year. Proper training would give instructors the confidence to use the equipment. DL teacher "support group"? Use of "elluminate" program or/and "blackboard" like program, computers for ALL students in every school every class! Maybe some designated after school times. Wider lenses so I can see more of the room, ability to zoom in on certain kids from host site, better fax/copy machines Updated rooms and equipment I would like to have a workshop with colleagues in August as an exchange of ideas for student engagement; strategies that would promote interaction between host school students and remote students. The aid in the room can not just be any person who is available. 3. What changes would you suggest for distance learning classes? Comments

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Teaching in the distance learning room was a great experience. The way the room and interaction is set up is very similar to a college level classroom. Students in others schools felt close to me and my subject - several told me they are going to pursue my subject in college. I expected the "distance" to hinder the relationships with students. It is always a pleasure to work with kids at another site who would not normally get the chance. I wasn’t sure if I would enjoy this teaching style but I really liked it. It always impresses me when the receiving sites have TA's or teachers in the room that are so wonderful and efficient! Teaching a DL course has made me a more effective teacher all-around. DL forced me to be creative and solve issues using non-traditional methods. 4. Are there any outcomes from teaching this course that you had not expected? Comments

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ DL by itself is a new instructional method - preparing lessons and teaching through a camera is unlike anything a teacher will ever experience. I had students create PowerPoints and send them to me. I could grade them via internet and send notes electronically. I did this with some homework assignments, some tests, and some quizzes as well. Also, I used the teacher aides to help me w/ homework. Something I don’t do often enough, but did this year was have students make movies. It all about the visual. Allowing students to email work to me was very efficient. Use of the Elmo and Blackboard. Less DVD videos used than in previous class, more online sites to verify information (60 minutes/frontline videos shown). Video streaming was a major part of this class. 5. Did you use any new instructional methods to effectively teach in the DL classroom? Comments

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________.________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Yes! Email, Edline (grades, attendance, calendar, notes attached, homework assignments etc), Skype! Email and Blackboard I used email, phone, and texting (especially for snow days) I rely extensively on Blackboard. Email for course assignments 6. Did you use any other forms of communication with the students in addition to daily distance learning classroom instruction (such as e-mail or telephone)? Comments

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support 7A. Did you visit your remote sites or arrange for them to visit you? Yes No There were 21 responses to this question. Comments

.. CRB/FEH/Questar III Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2009– 2010 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ It was interesting to see their perspective they said hosting makes it even clearer. It was too distant. Only to drop something off. I'd miss too many "regular" courses at home site to travel and teach at other schools. I WANTED to do so though. I had a field trip on a Saturday and many students from all classes spent the day with me so that was great. I wish I could visit more often, I only got to each school once. One of the remote schools has a very unusual configuration. Visiting allowed me to get to know students there as they were hard to see on screen. It really helped me get acquainted with them. I visited at least once a month. 7B. What were the advantages / disadvantages to visiting your remote school(s)? Comments
