Reasons for rapid growth a. New technology such as electricity and steel b. Migration of farmers, African Americans and immigrants from rural areas looking for jobs and excitement

3 B. P ROBLEMS OF U RBAN L IFE 1. Fire was constant threat 2. Poor people living the slums in crowded tenements 3. Disease outbreaks

4 C. I MPROVING C ITY L IFE 1. Cities began to improve urban life a. Streetlights b. Set up fire, sanitation and police departments c. Public health officials worked to control disease d. Hospitals and clinics set up for those who could not afford a doctor 2. Settlement Houses were set up to offer help to the poor in the cities

5 D. THE EXCITEMENT OF CITY LIFE 1. New attractions available in city that were not available country a. Department stores began where various goods were sold in sections within the same store. b. People worked long hard hours and were looking for time to relax c. Leisure Activities such as museums, parks, zoos and sporting events drew people into the city
