Being successful? Update from Japan’s Internet IPv6: How ready is Asia for this critical resource? APrIGF, June 16 2011 MAEMURA Akinori (前村 昌紀) JPNIC / Task Force on IPv4 Address Exhaustion, Japan

MAEMURA Akinori, June 16, 20112 Two recent developments

MAEMURA Akinori, June 16, 20113 KDDI announced IPv6 provision Monday April 18 – just after APNIC’s runout effective immediately on its FTTH solution “au Hikari (光) ” No additional fee, no customer action needed http://www.kddi.com/corporate/news_release/2011/0418a/

MAEMURA Akinori, June 16, 20114 NTT’s FLETS Hikari starts IPv6 Internet access NTT’S FLETS connects ISP and end-user residences FLETS Hikari (光) Next == NTT’s NGN offer After years consideration Multiple ISPs have already announce the adoption http://www.ntt-east.co.jp/release/1105/110526c_2.html

MAEMURA Akinori, June 16, 20115 Observation from Operators being successful

MAEMURA Akinori, June 16, 20116 IPv6, standardized in 1995, And assumed to be deployed gradually replacing IPv4 by the exhaustion of it But it never happened until now Assumption Actual http://www.potaroo.net/ispcol/2008-10/v4depletion.html

MAEMURA Akinori, June 16, 20117 Why not? No compatibility with IPv4 No direct merit for users Significant cost

MAEMURA Akinori, June 16, 20118 IPv4 Internet Growth of the Internet Which is reasonable way to go? Network Externality says IPv4 IPv6 Internet Exhaustion of IPv4 Address Internet with few services and few eyeballs Internet with full of services and eyeballs At least until the exaustion

MAEMURA Akinori, June 16, 20119 Dilemma of Operators and solution for it Definitely needs IPv6 for Future Internet –to accommodate more services and eyeballs Significant Cost for no direct merit for customers Need a miracle? Need Government fund? A solution: long, steady, low-key and patient endeavors make it happen

MAEMURA Akinori, June 16, 201110 Operators being successful has been taking long, low-key and patient efforts Time is money – Plan and action over years will benefit in many aspects: –Many small investments are easier to be justified than few big investments –IPv6 enabled equipment to renew on depreciation –Firmware upgrade when IPv6 enabled version got available reasonably –Play with lab network and learn about IPv6 to gain the expertise: literacy reduces the cost

MAEMURA Akinori, June 16, 201111 There has been no miracle… Task Force on IPv4 Address Exhaustion, Japan –three years since 2008 –actions to multi-stakeholders –Information – action plan template, training, reference network design, status update NTT FLETS is at last being ready –Most ISPs can use it for their IPv6 access from residences Operators has been taking patient efforts –Bottom up, low-key, long and steady –Gradually prepare for IPv6, in order to save the customers from the crisis

MAEMURA Akinori, June 16, 201112 Thank you! ありがとうござい ます Being successful? Update from Japan’s Internet IPv6: How ready is Asia for this critical resource? APrIGF, June 16 2011 MAEMURA Akinori (前村 昌紀) JPNIC / Task Force on IPv4 Address Exhaustion, Japan
