Look at this e-mail. Who is it from? Who is it to? What is it about? From: Shaw, Christopher B Sent: 20 April 2009 15:00 To: Bartram, Christine A; Austin, Elizabeth Cc: Meyer, Dilly Subject: RE: Accommodation in Southend Hi Christine I have just had a chat with Liz and we are hoping to come this Friday if that would be convenient. We can then visit the accommodation and discuss the programme to date! Best wishes, Chris

Now look at the sequence of e-mails that followed. What do you notice about the grammar used for making this future plan? Hi Chris Friday is fine with us. Terry and I have (different) meetings in the morning, but if you aimed to be with us sometime after 11.00 that’s fine. We can arrange to visit a couple of houses but probably early afternoon would be best for that and I’m happy to take us in my car. Best wishes Christine Dear Christine, I am driving to Southend this Friday with Mark Holloway, one of the tutors on the Southend programme. He can then meet you and also see where he will be staying hopefully! We aim to arrive around 11.30 if this is alright with you. Best wishes, Chris Hi Chris 11.30 am is fine with us. I’ll catch up with Darren on the housing position before then. Best wishes Christine

Now it’s your turn… Write a short e-mail to Mark requesting a meeting at 8.30am on Friday the 1 st of May. Think of a reason why you need to have this meeting with him and include it in your e-mail.

Now you are Mark… Write a short reply to your student’s e-mail. You are busy at 8.30am on Friday the 1 st of May. Think of a reason why and explain this in your e- mail. You should also explain your timetable for that day and suggest a time for a meeting after your classes that day. Mark’s timetable for Friday the 1 st of May: 9am – 11am GVD 11am – 1pm CAL and S/A

Give your reply to the student who wrote the first e-mail. When you receive your original e-mail, compare it with a partner. Are there any significant differences? Mark will take your writing at the end of the class to check.
