1 Mathematics 2 Ms. Meek Adding and Subtracting Money Amounts

2 Adding and subtracting money amounts is a very useful skill to have when needing to calculate item totals, and to determine change. Change is a term that refers to the difference between the amount of money used to pay for something, and the value of that item.. Adding & Subtracting With Money

3 Review: Writing Money Amounts $ - A dollar sign is used to represent amounts of money greater than or equal to one dollar.. - A decimal point divides dollars and fractions of a dollar (cents). ¢ - A cent sign can be used to represent an amount of money less than one dollar. **We do not use the $ and ¢ symbol at the same time.**

4 When adding and subtracting money amounts, the most important thing to remember is to line up the decimals so that the digits are correctly aligned. The difference will not be correct if the decimals do not line up. The decimal separates the dollars and cents. When subtracting or adding a money amount it must be written with a dollar sign and decimal, not a cent sign. Adding & Subtracting With Money
