1 Rick Hansen Secondary’s Scholarship Team 2015-16

2 to involve as many students as possible in scholarship pursuits for RHSS students to receive as many scholarships and bursaries as possible to provide application dates and procedures for post secondary to provide award application support and due dates to provide opportunities to participate in community service activities

3 Grad Program District Dogwood Authority Awards Abbotsford Community Foundation Awards SSA (Secondary School Apprentice) University / College Entrance Awards Major Entrance Scholarships Private Corporate Scholarships & Bursaries

4 These scholarships are capped at 5,000 recipients for the $1000 scholarships and 20 recipients for the $2500 scholarships (across the province) Criteria: a minimum of 73% (B) blended mark in a Language Art 12 (English) must have passed all 5 provincial exams (English 10, Science 10, Math 10, Socials 11, English 12) -- must rank amongst the top scholars in BC !

5 District Authority Awards RHSS’s Grad Class of 2015 won 24 awards These are $1250 awards (in a voucher) Projects are in a non-academic area and they require 100 hours of work in your Gr. 12 year Apply by October 8 th and complete your projects by April, 2015 Projects are adjudicated and final scores consist of your adjudicated mark and your Gr. 12 course mark !

6 Abbotsford Community Foundation Awards Students apply in late Feb/early March by filling out an application form online (it includes a letter, a financial planning sheet, a statement of grades, and reference letters) Funds are provided by Abbotsford businesses, estates, and community service organizations (eg. Rotary, Optimist Club) Abbotsford Community Foundation Donors choose the award recipients Awards (bursaries and scholarships) range from $500-$3000) Awards will be presented at Convocation !

7 Loran Scholarship Valued up to $100,000 for 4 years! 80 finalist awards are worth $2000-3000 each Application is due on Oct. 9 th if you would like to be sponsored by the school; Oct. 21 st Applicants must have demonstrated Exceptional character, service, and Leadership and have 85+% average Go to: www.loranscholarship.ca

9 Post Secondary School Entrance Awards Apply to these if….. -you have a 90% average or higher and you will be eligible to receive between $2000-$3000 -you have a 95% average or higher and you will be eligible to receive between $4000- $5000

10 Major Entrance Awards These go to the top all around students Top 2% of your grad class (merit-based) Must be involved in volunteer / leadership activities, sports, and/or fine arts, etc., in addition to being top in academics (broad- based) May need to be nominated by the school these are worth $4000-$40,000 (one time or renewable)

11 External Award Money There are many other sources of award $ to apply for through: -banks and financial institutions -corporations -endowment funds -non-profit organizations

13 It’s Your Time!!! Start a scholarship binder to build your portfolio: -certificates and awards -transcripts / past report cards -reference letters -work experience -volunteer experience -leadership / extra curricular activities

15 Where Do I Begin??? Be proactive- see your counsellors for more info, look at the Post Secondary Guides in the Counselling Centre, go on College/ University websites to find out more info. Attend all Scholarship Team Meetings / Events Listen to announcements, read the board outside of the Counselling Centre for updated info., go on the School’s website Read your RHSS Scholarship 2015-2016 Team emails & join our Facebook Group APPLY!!!! Don’t HESITATE or PROCRASTINATE!!!

16 Upcoming Dates: *UFV Advisor appointments are on Oct. 27th. *The next Scholarship Team Meeting will be held on October 20 th at lunch. *UBC Advisors are coming on November 3rd, beginning at 2:45 p.m. in the Learning Commons.
