OOI Annual Review Year 2 May 16 – 20, 2011 Ocean Observatories Initiative SIO Mechanical Design Samples 64” Float Designs: Global Hybrid Profiler Mooring, Mesoscale Flanking Mooring, and AST2

OOI Annual Review Year 2 May 16 – 20, 2011 Hybrid Profiler Mooring – 64” Float Assembly designed to fit standard WHOI 64” sphere design. Adaptable design allows for configurations for AST2, GHPM, and MFM with minimal exchange of parts. Can be attached in-line, or as a mooring top-element.

OOI Annual Review Year 2 May 16 – 20, 2011 Hybrid Profiler Mooring – 64” Float Top Weldment Assembly Strain relief to mitigate forces on the mooring cable from Surface Piercing Profiler (above) (4) upper lifting bails for easy recovery – based on previous WHOI design Mount tabs for beacons / external instruments

OOI Annual Review Year 2 May 16 – 20, 2011 Hybrid Profiler Mooring – 64” Float Bottom Weldment Assembly (4) lower lifting bails for further ease of handling during deployment and recovery Shown here with load cell as it will be deployed in AST2 WHOI standard EM chain WHOI standard universal joint

OOI Annual Review Year 2 May 16 – 20, 2011 Hybrid Profiler Mooring – 64” Float Internal Cage Assembly Allows for protected placement of instruments and controller inside the sphere. Removable for easy maintenance of installed components. Simple, modular construction for further ease of assembly and installation.

OOI Annual Review Year 2 May 16 – 20, 2011 Hybrid Profiler Mooring – 64” Float Standard WHOI inductive termination (on cable to Surface Piercing Profiler) attaches here Load cell data logger for AST2 Modular cage sections Internal Cage Assembly Handles for cage removal

OOI Annual Review Year 2 May 16 – 20, 2011 Mesoscale Flanking Mooring – 64” Float Mooring Top Float – 30m Depth Most parts identical to Global Hybrid Profiler Mooring 64” float, for added benefit of common components Full suite of instruments installed in center well

OOI Annual Review Year 2 May 16 – 20, 2011 Mesoscale Flanking Mooring – 64” Float Top Weldment Assembly Top plate in place of strain relief to interface with internal cage assembly (4) upper lifting bails for easy recovery Mount tab shown here with fluorometer/turbidity sensor as deployed in the MFM (additional protection will be added)

OOI Annual Review Year 2 May 16 – 20, 2011 Mesoscale Flanking Mooring – 64” Float Internal Cage Assembly Allows for protected placement of instruments and controller inside the sphere. Removable for easy maintenance of installed components. Simple, modular construction for further ease of assembly and installation of wide range of instrument types and sizes.

OOI Annual Review Year 2 May 16 – 20, 2011 MFM - Internal Cage Assembly Mesoscale Flanking Mooring – 64” Float pH instrument SIO titanium controller housing Handles for cage removal CTD Dissolved Oxygen Instrument Pump – Ensures high-precision measurements with a controlled supply of uncontaminated water to internal instruments
