Objectives EEn.1.1.2.A. Explain effects of the two main motions of the Earth EEn.1.1.2.B. Explain how the tilt of the Earth’s axis results in seasons due to the amount of solar energy impacting the Earth’s surface. Agenda IN: What do we know? Chart THROUGH: Fusion/Fission and Solar Radiation Notes OUT: What do we know NOW? Chart PRACTICE: MSL Prep Notebook Title: Nuclear Fusion and Nuclear Fission Date: March 4 th, 2013 Pages: What happens to energy produced by the sun?

Input: Prior Knowledge Copy this table into your notes. I knowI sort of knowI don’t know

Place the following vocabulary words into your table. Fuel Oxygen Atom Nuclear fusion Nuclear fission Heat Energy Nucleus Combustion

What is combustion? Combustion: a fuel reacts with oxygen to release heat energy

How can energy be released? Nuclear fission: splitting of an atom in 2 or more atoms, releasing energy – Ex: atomic bomb, nuclear power plants Nuclear fusion: combining of 2 atoms to become 1 larger atom, releasing energy – Ex: energy created in stars Both fusion AND fission turn matter into energy

How does the Sun produce energy? The sun produces heat, light, and radiation through nuclear fusion.

1H1H 1H1H 2 He 2 Hydrogen atoms combine Form a Helium atom, releases HUGE amounts of energy Fusion of Hydrogen in the Sun

How does the energy from the Sun get to us? Energy from the sun travels through nearly empty space through radiation – Radiation: transfer of energy through electromagnetic wave motion

Output: Compare and Contrast Compare and contrast Nuclear Fusion and Nuclear Fission. Remember your Criteria for Success: – Written in COMPLETE SENTENCES. – Definition and example of item 1 – Definition and example of item 2 – 1 similarity
