Kenyon Barr Cincinnati’s Lost Community

Urban Renewal? Or... Renewal gone awry? This neighborhood, once part of the West End in downtown Cincinnati, was demolished in the 1950s.

What does it mean to demolish a community?  Who does it help?  Who does it hurt?  Where do the former residents go?  How are memories altered, preserved, or lost?  How does identity change for the people? The city?

How do community and geography impact identity?  How much of who you are is generated by either where you are from, or where you have lived?  Would your identity change if one of the places that defines you disappeared? How? Or, why not?

Identity Project  You are going to explore your identity – how it is shaped, defined, and represented by all the different elements in your past and present.  You will create a typed, 1-2 page written identity statement describing and explaining your identity (Be creative! Tell a story, write a poem, draft a future obituary – you choose!)  50 points

Identity Project, part II  You will create a multimedia presentation to be delivered in class using video and/or computer technology.  Your presentation will include visual images (the photographs you’ve been compiling), supporting text (brief captions, NOT extensive paragraphs), logical organization and smooth transitions to create an appealing visual display. You may include a musical soundtrack as well.  50 points

Identity Project, Part III  You will present your project to the class (you will ‘premiere’ your multimedia presentation, but you need not read your written piece).  Presentations should be clear, articulate, and well-organized.  50 points

Logistics  Presentations will begin the week of September 4  You must have ALL components in order to present (written and visual)  Your presentation grades will be calculated during your presentation  You will submit your written component at the close of your presentation.  You do NOT need to submit a copy of your multimedia presentation for grading following the presentation.
