1 Update on Student and Family Empowerment (SAFE) Program and Elementary Counseling Board of Education Report February 3, 2015 1

2 S.A.F.E. Overview The SAFE Program is designed to provide consistent services to students throughout their educational career. A team of service providers work with families in an identified neighborhood to address core issues that hinder student achievement. Areas that are addressed include, but are not limited to: Academics Attendance Behavior Health Safety Family Dynamics Parent Education Coordination of services 2

3 S.A.F.E. Partnership with Child Abuse Prevention Council Staff includes: 1 Supervisor, 2 Clinicians, 2 Family Advocates, and 2 Master Level Interns Serves the attendance area of Delta Sierra which includes children who attend Parklane, Sutherland, Oakwood, Creekside, Wagner Holt, Delta Sierra, Bear Creek and McNair. Total of 112 referrals from participating schools to date in 2014-15 3

4 S.A.F.E. Emphasis placed on improving school performance and attendance by focusing on the parent-child relationship with the goal of strengthening the family unit. Incorporates school based mental health services and home based support Lunch Bunch for students: 94 students Parent contacts: 115 Home visits: 256 Parent Café: Average attendance at each school: 5 parents 4

5 Elementary Counseling Services Four Itinerant Elementary Counselors Region 1 – Creekside, Elkhorn, John Muir, Julia Morgan, Manlio Silva, Oakwood, Podesta Ranch, and Wagner Holt. Region 2– Ansel Adams, Clairmont, Davis, Mosher, Live Oak, Parklane, Sutherland, and Westwood. Region 3 – Houston, Lakewood, Lawrence, Lockeford, Reese, Vinewood, Washington, and Woodbridge. Region 4 – Beckman, Borchardt, Heritage, Needham, Nichols, Larson, and Victor. 5

6 Elementary Counseling Services Short Term Individual/Group Counseling (4-6 average sessions) Crisis Intervention Pre/Post Assessments to measure student progress Refer families to community resources. 6

7 Elementary Counseling Services Four lesson “Anti-Bullying” curriculum presented to all 3 rd graders. Pre/Post Assessment to assess content knowledge and attitudes regarding “Bullying” Attend ISTs, IEPs, Parent Conferences, etc. 7
