4. Chemical Pest Control Use of pesticides: herbicides, insecticides and fungicides to kill pests. May affect other organisms. Must be selectively toxic (narrow-spectrum) and biodegradable – why? Needs to be reapplied – expensive! May lead to resistance.

5. Biological Pest Control Uses living organisms. Natural predators/parasites/pathogens. Keep pest organism population below economic threshold. Must ensure the control measure doesn’t become a pest.

6. Integrated Pest Management Involves careful monitoring of pest population to keep it below the economic threshold. Two or more types of pest control are used in combination.

7. Integrated Pest Management 4 stages: 1.Identify pests and economic threshold. 2.Use suitable cultural methods to control pest populations. 3.If threshold is exceeded, use biological control. 4.If biological control doesn’t work, use pesticides, but at a low and carefully controlled dose.
