1 The Use of Communication Devices in the Tertiary Education Sector Fiona Given Macquarie University

2 Introduction I'm doing Arts Law at Macquarie university. Honours in Politics. I have Cerebral Palsy which makes my speech difficult to understand and effects my mobility. My speech is my primary disability.

3 Pathfinder Manufactured by the Prentke Romich Company. High tech AAC device.

4 AAC AAC stands for alternative and augmentative communication. AAC is basically any form of non verbal communication. Ranging from low tech methods such as signing, and communication boards to high tech voice output devices, such as the Pathfinder.

5 Something New Communication devices are relatively new to the tertiary education, and employment sectors. Very few people who use communication devices in tertiary education and employment in Australia. Assumptions that everyone with complex communication needs has a cognitive defect.

6 How this Technology has assisted my participation in tertiary education It has assisted me to participate in tutorials. One tutor asked me direct questions! The Pathfinder is also a computer access device.

7 Reducing Keystrokes Word prediction - As the words are typed a number of words come up on the touch screen for the user to select. Activity rows –frequently used phrases – accessed via the touch screen. Important for the prevention of RSI.

8 Cost $18000 Insufficient funding available for communication devices. Barrier to people gaining employment.
