The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens

“The challenge that teens faced 150 years ago was hard work. The challenge that teens face today is a lack of hard work”  Discuss

How many do you have to do on a daily basis?  Homework  Afterschool activity  Teams  Video games  Spend time with Boyfriend/girlfriend  Watch little brother/sister  Afterschool job

1. Habit 1- Be proactive- You are in charge of your life 2. Habit 2- Begin with the end in mind- make plans for the future- Mission and Goals 3. Habit 3- Put First Things First  Learn to prioritize the events in your life to make sure you reach your goals. You put the most important things first so they are sure to get done

 Will Power- the strength to say yes to your most important things  Mission and goals  Activities that lead to completion of your mission and goals  Won’t Power- the strength to say no to less important things and to peer pressure  Video games, phone calls, TV, sleeping

 Your busy life is like a small suitcase.  There are only so many hours in a day  If you fold your clothes when you pack a suitcase, you can fit more in  If you plan your life’s activities, you can get more done

 Important- activities that contribute to your mission and your goals  School work, work, etc.  Urgent- pressing things, activities that demand immediate attention  Ringing phone, eating, test next period

 Addicted to urgency  Puts off important things until the last moment  creates urgency  Get a rush for doing something quickly  Urgent things always come up ▪ Phone calls, sick kids, called into work  Problems with Procrastination  Because things are done at the last minute, they are never done to their best  Creates unnecessary stress  Burnout

“I don’t know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to try to please everyone.” Bill Cosby

 Doing things that are urgent, but not important  Hanging out with friends, phone calls, TV shows  Try to please others- Are afraid to say no because it will hurt their feelings  These urgent things seem important, but they are not  The yes man ends up never making anyone happy  He is fickle and has no backbone

 Problems with being a yes man  Reputation for being a pleaser  Lack of discipline  Feeling like doormat for others to wipe their feet on

 The category of waste and excess  These activities are neither urgent nor important  TV, video games, mall trips, etc.  Professional Couch Potato  Never had a job, may never get one

 The results of living in Quadrant 4  Lack of responsibility  Guilt  Flakiness  Nothing, absolutely nothing

 The Quadrant of Excellence  Made up of:  Important, but not urgent things  Relaxation  Building friendships  Planning ahead  Doing assignments- on time  Prioritizers are people who “have it together”

 They can say “no” with a smile because they have other things to do  Are never surprised by teachers asking for assignments  Have plenty of quality fun, because they have already done the hard stuff

 Results of Q2  Control of your life  Balance  High performance

 Do important things early (don’t procrastinate)  Don’t try to please everyone  Don’t be easily interrupted  Quit slacking  Do important things then relax  Don’t relax then do important things

 Buy a planner (use a spiral notebook)  Write assignments  Appointments  To-do lists  Goals  Planners don’t tie you down… the free up more time

 Plan Weekly  Take 15 minutes to plan your week  Identify the Big Rocks  what are the most important things I need to accomplish this week ▪ Think of the roles you play in your life ▪ Student- study for English test ▪ Friend- birthday part  Block out time for your Big Rocks ▪ These are the important things, so schedule them first ▪ Put in the little rocks- these are everyday, less important things
