Alison - Good afternoon & welcome to the session on successful strategies use to build the learning continuum from K to 12 in the Minto Community of Schools. Introduce self & this is my colleague Sarah Redfern High School is located in SWSR of Sydney, NSW in a suburb called Minto. Building the learning continuum K-12

2 What did Sarah Redfern HS look like pre - 2010?

3 Year 7 Orientation Low socio-economic area
Low literacy and numeracy levels Low socio-economic area Public housing Poor community reputation Poor relationship with Community of Schools 1 of 5 metropolitan schools attracting 4 transfer points Drastic reduction of student numbers Year 7 Orientation Alison – Firstly we would like to give you a snapshot of our school. Refer to bubbles SRHS was drastically losing student numbers, so we need to take action & ownership of the situation.

4 What changes did we make?

5 Joint partnership with our four feeder primary schools
Created a Middle School Year 7 Orientation SRHS needed to build a marketing strategy that showed the exemplary programs that showcase what is available at the High School which had bought about an improvement in student learning outcomes. The MCOS is a joint partnership between 1 High School & 4 PS. Goal was to work collaborately to develop a learning continuum which supports every student.

HT MS ongoing school visits to stage 3 and Orientation Day Enrichment Program Stage 3 Endicott Cup Stages 2 and 3 Campbelltown Academic Challenge Stage 3 Community of Schools – Principals and Teachers Term Meetings Year 6 to 7 Transition Program/Policy to MS targeting students at risk Community of Schools Swimming Carnival A day in the life of….Conference Shared professional learning Year 7 Orientation MCOS Choir MCOS Art Exhibition Selective Class First strategy was the appointment of Manager Community. Their brief was to be the contact, liaison & lead in the implementation of strategies to build this successful continuum Strategies

Laptop provision to enhance student learning Curriculum delivery through Teaming Programming using 4MAT – concept based units Appointment of Head Teacher Middle School Individual Learning Plans for ALL students in the MS

Highest results experienced for ESSA Largest growth in NAPLAN Settled classrooms with students engaged in learning Collaborative planning, programming, sharing resources of high school team

10 Meet our Middle School students

11 Success Endicott Cup Round 1 2015 Winners
Endicott Cup is an academic competition held once a tern hosted by the High School between the 4 feeder PS. Focus areas include numeracy & literacy Success

12 Success A Day in the Life of…Conference
This was a mini conference held at the High School with Stage 3 & 4 teachers presenting programs, classroom behaviour strategies, positive behaviour learning & general running of classrooms on a day to day basis. Success

13 Success Enrichment Program
G&T is a program designed by a High School teacher & held at the High School for Stage 3 students for the COS Focus is numeracy & literacy with 2014 being literacy including drama workshops. Parents attend the initial session, runs for 20 weeks every Tuesday & finishing with a graduation ceremony. Success

14 Success Campbelltown Academic Challenge
It is an academic competition across KLA’s developed in partnership with the Local State MP Mr Bryan Doyle to engage G&T students. 3year – start with 16 schools currently 20 local schools have registered for 2014. Success

15 Community of Schools Swimming Carnival
High School PD/H/PE coordinates a COS swimming carnival with MCOS PS Senior students from the High School assist as judges, marshals & organisers for the day. Success

16 Success Selective Class
A new strategy implemented for 2014 was the introduction of a selective class into the MS Success

17 Success K to 12 Where to next?
Data evidence that enrolments have increase CAC – started at 16 school increased to 20 & had to cap at that EC – UWS have asked to model our competition in other areas of Sydney Community is embracing the school & parents are seeking enrolment from out of area enrolment for Year 7 – currently at 84 in comparison to 2013 – 36 High student turnover – 2011 – 125 student, coming & going. Success

18 Future Plans Year 7 Orientation Music Evening
Sports Coaching with Senior Students Gala Sports Day Combined Multicultural Day Sharing of data collected by Primary Schools eg PLAN and continued placement on the continuum A Day in the Life of Conference 2015 Stages 3 and 4 teachers Continued partnership with primary schools building on existing skills Year 7 Orientation As a result of SDD, the following ideas were suggested by staff to expand the MCOS initiative to enhance & continue the build the learning continuum of our COS Future Plans
