DateSession #ActivityPage # 12/5,811Diagram warm up What is a proxy? 17 Climate Proxy Lab…formal grade18 12/11-1212 Life History 19 Geologic Time Notes 20 Geologic Time Scale Model 21 Warm Up: Write a brief history of your life, using major events, not dates to describe it to this point Homework: complete textbook review questions 71A ?’s 4-14, 72A ?’s 17-20, 73A ?’s 1-5 Put the answers on p22 of your notebook Test 12/18-19, review session 12/17 am/pm

8.E.2 Understand the history of Earth and its life forms based on evidence of change recorded in fossil records and landforms. 8.E.2.1 Infer the age of Earth and relative age of rocks and fossils from index fossils and ordering of rocks layers (relative dating and radioactive dating) 8.E.2.2 Explain the use of fossils, ice cores, composition of sedimentary rocks, faults, and igneous rock formations found in rock layers as evidence of the history of the Earth and its changing life forms

TLW describe geologic time and how rocks, fossils and ice cores have helped develop that time scale by analyzing demonstrations and creating a time line of the major eras and the events that separated those eras. Students will then review earth’s history evidence in small groups for classroom “Hunger Games.”

Divide p. 20 in half 4 Corners How have organisms changed over time? Geologic Hallway When have different organisms appeared in history?

Life on Earth has a history of change called evolution. Evolution of living organisms is revealed in the Geologic Time Scale. It is a calendar of Earth’s history based on fossil evidence found in rocks and climate evidence in ice cores. TIME PERIODS ARE DIVIDED BY MAJOR EVENTS, NOT DATES Smaller divisions in the scale are distinguished by the appearance of new forms of lifeorganisms that lived during each time period. Fossils provide the evidence of these changes.

The geologic time scale/line shows that an enormous diversity of organisms has existed on Earth. The dividing lines for the eras are major events found in fossil records There are two types of major events: – mass extinctions are the disappearance of large numbers of species – mass radiations are the sudden appearance of large numbers of new organisms.

4 corners…what time? Look at your organism….go to the corner representing what era or time you believe your organism first appeared on earth

4 corners…what time? Look at your organism….go to the corner representing what era or time you believe your organism first appeared on earth On page 20, summarize this activity. What did it demonstrate? How did the types of organisms on earth change as we move from era to era? What type of organisms were predominant in each era. Use complete sentences

Geologic Hallway time scale… when in time? Silent…map testing is going on Position yourself on the timeline based on when you believe your organisms first arrived on the planet.

On page 20, summarize this activity. What did it demonstrate? How did the types of organisms on earth change as we move from era to era? Use complete sentences

Putting it all together… Create Geologic Time Scale tape 1.Fold your paper hotdog style to create 4 sections 2.Cut apart the sections 3.Tape them end to end 4.At the top of the strip, label one end “0” and the other end “now” 0 now

Putting it all together… Create Geologic Time Scale tape Draw vertical lines to divide precambrian time and the three eras 49” 4“ 2.25”.75”

Putting it all together… Create Geologic Time Scale tape Label the time periods Pre-Cambrian Time Paleozoic Meso Ceno EraEra Era Tape the LATE/RECENT end of the geologic time scale to page 20

Putting it all together… Create Geologic Time Scale tape Pre-Cambrian Time Paleozoic Meso Ceno EraEra Era

Use pages 61A – 67A in your text book and printed web articles Complete your timeline: For each era: The major event(s) that mark the beginning & end of the era Type of organisms that dominated and emerged in that era 2 other facts about the era Illustration of two organisms from that era Each era’s section must be “decorated” to represent the climate/environment of the earth at that time http://archive.fieldmuseum.org/evolvingplanet/POST/EP_V8.swf You will be able to use this on the quiz next class period.
